“No matter what happens, it'll be an adventure!”

The Krummholz Zone features tales of cold winter climbs and backpacking trips, not all of them successful. I hope the articles and journals of my trips will inspire you to follow your own dreams, where ever they may lead.

Krummholz (German for crooked wood) is found at treeline where the trees grow as low, dense, twisted mats or shrubs. Trees grow in this pattern because the vertical growth breaks off, especially when frozen, and the tree then bushes out. By forming krummholz as a defense against harsh weather and severe winds, trees are able to survive in this rugged terrain.
